What is Intumescent Painting?

Intumescent paint is a type of reactive paint that swells up or “intumesces” to up to 25 times its original thickness when exposed to high temperatures such as in the event of a fire. Similar to cementitious fireproofing it protects the steel columns, beams and joist to ensure your buildings structure stays intact.

Intumescent Fireproofing Applications

Intumescent paint can be used in many different applications. There are interior rated water based and solvent based products. These interior based products are used in lobbies, atriums, gymnasiums or any other area for aesthetic purposes.

Exterior rated intumescent paint is epoxy based and can be used in commercial and industrial applications. A few common uses of epoxy based intumescent paint would be exterior canopies or stairwells in parking garages or other buildings that remain open to the elements.
